Donovan Jonson writes quite a compelling piece about Augustine's use of rhetoric in the confessions which you may be interested in reading. The piece is entitled "Story and Design in Book eight of Augustine's Confessions". It is accessible on the JSTOR database. I have pasted a link below though you may need to access it via the Wits library.

This is an excellent book exploring Augustine's attitude to language. There is quite an extended discussion on the section in Book One that somebody mentioned in class:
